Extremely Rare Glazed Redware Jar, Stamped "H. STEPHENS," probably Western PA origin, early to mid 19th century, cylindrical form with footed base, tooled shoulder, and flattened rim, the surface covered in a reddish-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Underside impressed with "H. STEPHENS" maker's mark. H. Stephens is probably the Henry Stephens who potted in Allegheny City (Allegheny County), Pennsylvania around the middle of the 19th century, appearing there in the 1850 and 1860 federal censuses. This is probably the same Henry Stephens who was associated with Daniel Boughner in Greensboro circa 1820, during an early period when the primary output of southwestern Pennsylvania potters was still earthenware / redware. Provenance: Originally found in the Hagerstown, MD area. Chips and wear to rim, base, and shoulder. Additional surface wear. H 10".
