Twenty-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES / STAR POTTERY / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring Hamilton and Jones / Star Pottery maker's stenciling surrounding stenciled rose, floral, and star motifs, flanked by additional stenciled floral motifs. Freehand "20" below, flanked by dashes, underscored by vining. Freehand stripe decoration to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size with an attractive mix of stenciled and freehand decoration. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. An 8" vertical line to proper right side of jar's front. A 6" vertical line at base on proper left side of jar's front and and a 7" Y-shaped line above. Two Y-shaped lines to midsection on reverse, measuring 11" and 6". A 4" line to underside, extending 3/4" onto base. None of these lines appears to extend through to the interior. Some surface wear to reverse. H 24 3/4".
