Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Ravenswood, WV Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "H.L. VANMATRE. / & CO. / DRY GOODS AND / GROCERIES / QUEENS / AND / STONEWARE / RAVENSWOOD. W. VA." Stenciled floral motifs above stenciling and block stenciling to base. Freehand stripe decoration to upper body and base. Provenance: From a fifty-year West Virginia collection. Some wear to stenciling. A 2" surface line from rim on proper left side of jar, not visible on interior. A small in-the-firing ping near base on reverse of jar. The name, "Read," in black marker on underside. H 9 7/8".
