Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, the upper half brush-decorated with an undulating vine bearing tulips, the bottom half with Isaac Hewitt, Jr. makers stenciling above a freehand "6" flanked by swags, between two wavy lines. Base with freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "6" at shoulder on front and on top of rim. Desirable maker, decoration, and size. A 1 1/2" chip to reverse end of proper left handle. A 4" crack on underside, continuing 2 1/4" up base on proper left side of jar. A minor in-the-firing horizontal surface line on reverse, not visible on interior, where two sections of the jar were joined during manufacture. A minor in-the-firing ping at base on far left side of jar's base. H 16 1/2".
