Ten-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, brush-decorated with an undulating fuchsia vine motif between freehand stripes. Base inscribed "10," above a looping vine motif. Freehand stripe at base. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. A minor nick to one handle. A Y-shaped crack across underside, including a 3 1/4" reglued piece. This damage includes a 3" filled flake on underside, which tapers to a 1 1/2" filled hole in underside. The crack on the underside forming a long curving crack on reverse, which extends across the midsection of the proper left side of the crock and onto the front, and includes two vertical cracks ascending from it. The crack on the underside additionally includes a crack that extends 5" up the base of the crock's front. Minor areas of whitish residue to surface. A glazed-over scratch and raised bubble to midsection on front. Some minor surface staining. H 17 3/4".
