Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "G. & A. Black," Somerfield, PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with sweeping tulip motifs, one bearing three blossoms and another bearing a single blossom. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and a curving line of cobalt beneath each handle. Impressed under one handle with the elusive maker's mark of George and Albert Black below a four-gallon capacity mark. One of only a few examples that we have offered bearing this stamp. Heavy chipping to rim. A minor chip to one handle. One base chip. A small in-the-firing surface chip to one side. Some staining to surface. H 13 3/8".
