Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and "1858" Date, Stamped "J. SWANK & CO. / JOHNSTOWN, PA," 1858, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with early-period Swank motifs consisting of three flowers emanating from a curved, leafy stem. The freehand date, "1858," appears below one handle, underscored by series of graduated stripes. A Swank maker's mark and six-gallon capacity mark appear under the opposing handle, also underscored by stripes. Handle terminals decorated with brushed flower blossoms. Desirable size, decoration, and early-period date. Significant cracks, primarily on underside. A 2" flake to interior base. Rim is out-of-round. H 16".
