Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Incised Decoration, Inscribed "Jacob J. Swank Maid(sic) September the 18 yer(sic) 1875" and "1875," Johnstown, PA origin, 1875, ovoid jar with delicate, flattened rim, profusely-decorated around the body with highly unusual incised renderings of the Swanks' classic flowering vine motifs. Additionally incised on underside with the date, "1875." The extravagant decoration and incised inscription make this jar among the most important examples of Swank stoneware to come to auction in years. Large rim chips. A faint 2" line from rim. H 5 1/8"; Diam. (at rim) 5 1/2".
