Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Inscribed "Enoch Fowler," Beaver, PA origin, third quarter 19th century, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a spotted motif possibly meant to depict ears of corn, below a series of conjoined X's, applied over a slip-coated surface. This decoration may allude to the production of corn whiskey. Signed below in cobalt script, "Enoch Fowler." Handles decorated with freehand stripes, swags below, and highlights to the terminals. Impressed "4" on top of rim. Excellent condition with a few minor chips to interior of rim. H 14 1/4".
