Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "BOUGHNER / GREENSBORO," PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and incised banding below, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with undulating vines interspersed with freehand stripes. Base with freehand "4" flanked by vine motifs along with graduated dashes above and below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed on reverse with "BOUGHNER/ GREENSBORO" maker's mark in which the initials "A & W" have been removed, likely employed shortly after Alexander Vance Boughner took sole ownership of the pottery. Staining to surface. Otherwise as-made condition. Far left side of jar with an in-the-firing contact mark involving a chip, minor nick, and small adhered piece of clay. A recessed in-the-firing contact mark to far right side of jar. A few in-the-making glaze drips to reverse. Some in-the-firing surface crazing to bottom edge, not visible on interior. H 14 3/4".
