Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Churn, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA.," circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, featuring James Hamilton maker's stenciling along with stenciled rose, tulip, and stylized vine motifs. Stenciled "4" flanked by floral devices above. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes wooden dasher and guide. Shallow chips to interior of rim. A chip to each left handle. A 7 3/4" Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A thin 2 3/4" crack from rim on front. Circle in-the-firing fissure around underside, partially visible on interior, including two vertical surface fissures visible on interior base area, which do not extend through to exterior. Some minor grease staining. H 16 1/2".
