Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Greensboro or New Geneva, PA origin, circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled body, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated at the shoulder with a vine featuring an unusual scrolled terminal, bearing three Germanic tulips, at the midsection with a band of vining, and at the base with an outlined "4" flanked by wavy lines. The different motifs are separated by freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A particularly fine example of the artistry of Western Pennsylvania's stoneware decorators. Light surface wear. H 12".
