Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled body and semi-rounded rim, featuring freehand vining to the shoulder, stripes below the rim, at the midsection, and at the base, a cobalt-script "2" flanked by stripes at the bottom half. A professionally-restored area to base on front below "2," not affecting cobalt and not extending through to interior. An area of restoration to rim and shoulder on reverse, including a 1 1/2" surface line below, not visible on interior. A small chip to interior of rim. Some minor in-the-firing contact marks to surface. H 10 1/4".
