Rare Twelve-Gallon Freehand-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Stenciled "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA," circa 1875, with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed flowering tulip vine design, freehand stripes, and a "12" with leafy flourishes at base. Stenciled near the base with Isaac Hewitt, Jr., maker's stenciling. Impressed "12" on front and back. Large chunk out of front right surrounded by chips and flaking. Large y-shaped crack in back extending across bottom. Large stain in back. Other lesser flaws including rim and handle chips. H 20 1/2".
