Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "E & L P NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a leaf. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A spider crack on underside, extending 6 1/2" up proper left side of jar, as well as onto base on proper right side of jar, where it forms a long T. An approximately 3" Y-shaped surface near base on front, not visible on interior. Some wear to cobalt. Spots of staining to surface. A small chip to proper left handle. A 1 5/8" hairline from rim. H 12".
