Rare and Fine Ten-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Pittsburgh, PA Advertising, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / MANUFACTURERS / GREENSBORO. PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring the stenciled advertising, "OMMERT AND HOFFIELD. / CHOICE / FAMILY GROCERIES. / NO. 15. DIAMOND. / PITTSBURGH," accented with stenciled flourishes. Further stenciled below with James Hamilton & Co. signature, surrounding an abstract stenciled design, flanked by swags and underscored by a stripe. Additional freehand stripe decoration to upper body, midsection, and base. Stenciled "10" with flourishes at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent size and rare application of advertising and maker's stenciling. A 6 1/2" crack from rim on front, forming an approximately 3" wide T. A 2 1/4" line on underside, forming an approximately 6 1/2" T at base on reverse. A minor nick and small glazed-over chip to proper right handle. Areas of staining to surface. H 20".
