Fine Sixteen-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY" and "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle carrying arrows in one foot and a banner in its beak, inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY." Stenciled below with the signature, "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA.," surrounding and underscored by stenciled rose motifs. Base with stenciled "16" flanked by stenciled flourishes. Freehand stripes to shoulder area and base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable eagle stencil and size. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. A 2 1/8" chip to interior of rim. Proper left handle with a 7/8" chip and minor chip. Thin cracks in underside, including a crack extending 5 1/4" onto base on front. Some additional tight lines and short in-the-firing surface, both not visible on interior, at base. A salt drip to shoulder on front. H 23 1/2".
