Fine Twenty-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Eagle Motif, Stenciled "T.F. REPPERT / SUCCESSOR TO JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO. PA," circa 1880, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated on the upper half with a stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle clutching arrows in one foot and carrying a banner inscribed "EAGLE POTTERY" in its beak. Freehand stripe decoration above and below. Bottom half of jar features T.F. Reppert maker's stenciling, including desirable "SUCCESSOR TO" slogan, flanked by stenciled roses. Base with freehand "20" flanked by flourishes, underscored by a stripe. Among the finest examples of T.F. Reppert stoneware that we have offered. Very nice condition. A 7 1/4" Y-shaped line to midsection on front. A small chip to interior of rim. Some minor surface wear and minor staining. A salt drip to shoulder on front. A circular in-the-firing contact mark to midsection on front. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing surface chip with piece of adhered clay on reverse. H 25 1/2".
