Rare and Fine Twenty-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Stenciled Rose Decoration, Stenciled "From / James Hamilton & Co. / Greensboro, Pa," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, extravagantly-decorated with stenciled rose motifs surrounding James Hamilton & Co. maker's stenciling with rare vertical application, along with a stenciled bold-faced "20" flanked by flourishes. Stenciled stripe decoration above and below. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable size and decoration. A large section of proper left handle restored. Two base chips. A chip to underside at edge. A thin, 7 1/4" vertical in-the-firing fissure to base on reverse, which was partially glazed over in the firing. This fissure extends 6" onto underside where it is filled and colored. **The following is updated information about the condition of this lot: A 3/4" chip to shoulder molding, which has been colored, adjacent to a small reglued surface flake to shoulder molding.
