Outstanding Twenty-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated at the upper body with an undulating, flowering vine between freehand stripes. Bottom half of jar decorated with alternating vine and wavy stripe motifs, above a large freehand "20," flanked by dashes and underscored by a stripe. The exuberant decoration, size, color, and condition of this work make it among the best examples of Western Pennsylvania "big ware" to come to auction in recent years. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced IL collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition, a rarity for jars of this size, with a salt drip on front. H 25 1/4".
