Large-Sized Albany-Slip-Glazed Stoneware Devil Face Jug, Signed "Evan's Pottery / Arden, NC / Handmade," Evan Javan Brown, Jr., Arden, NC, circa 1985, ovoid jug with hand-modeled and applied devil's face including eyes with horizontal china pupils, eyebrows, ears, nose, open mouth with broken china teeth, mustache, goatee, and horns. Heavily-incised hair to eyebrows, mustache, and goatee. Surface covered in a blackish Albany slip glaze with white highlights to horns. Exhibited: "Amen, Amen: Religious and Southern Self-Taught Artists in the Mullis Collection," October 4, 2014- January 10, 2015, illustrated in exhibition catalog. Provenance: Slotin Auction, April 26, 2014, lot 58; Carl and Marian Mullis Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 13 1/2".
