Extremely Rare Stoneware Face Jug, attributed to Arie Meaders, Cleveland, GA, circa 1956-1967, squat-shaped jug with hand-modeled and applied clay face including prominent ears, eyebrows, nose, and mouth, the figure's relief eyes formed by smoothing two oval areas of clay at the shoulder. Incised hair to head and upper lip. Underside with eleven pierced holes. Penciled acquisition date, "1967," on underside. Arie Meaders is regarded as the leading female folk ceramicist of the 20th century and few face jugs by this potter are known. This lot is reportedly Arie Meader's first surviving face jug, its smaller size and piercings in the underside helping to ensure it would not crack during the firing. Provenance: Originally purchased from Arie Meaders by a close friend following the death of Meaders's husband, Cheever, in 1967; Stan Clark, August 5, 2013; Carl and Marian Mullis Collection. Excellent condition with a very minor chip to one ear. H 5 1/4".
