Important Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Double Face Jug with U.S. Presidential Provenance, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa 1975, ovoid jug with two applied, open handles, decorated on each side with a hand-modeled face with rock teeth, kaolin eyes, and black-glazed pupils. One face has a crooked smile while the other is straight-faced. Surface covered in a dark, mottled alkaline glaze. Incised on underside "Lanier Meaders". Referred to as Janus jugs, or "politician jugs" after the Watergate Hearings, this form is discussed in Dr. John Burrison's Brothers in Clay, with the following: "Having two handles and a bit larger than his standard model, these became a popular item, but they involved too much work and eventually Lanier resolved to never produce another" (Burrison, pg. 270). This particular jug was displayed in 1980 at a dinner hosted by Atlanta philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas G. Cousins, for the U.S. Presidential campaign of George H.W. Bush. At this event, face jugs were the centerpiece of each table throughout their backyard, with each vessel holding a candle. Provenance: Purchased directly from Lanier Meaders at his pottery in Cleveland, Georgia, circa 1975; Displayed at George H.W. Bush Presidential Campaign Dinner, 1980; The Levison & Cullen Gallery, Atlanta, GA, 2012; Carl and Marian Mullis Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9".
