Extremely Rare Stoneware Flowerpot with Incised Bird Decoration, attributed to Lyman & Clark, Gardiner, ME, circa 1837-1841, flaring pot with attached saucer and stylish, semi-rounded rim molding, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched on a leafy stem. Impressed circular eye to bird and incised details to wing and leaves. Bird highlighted in ochre and cobalt slip and leaves highlighted in cobalt slip. Two original drain holes at base. The only Lyman & Clark flowerpot that we have seen, this work features both ochre and cobalt slip decoration, each frequently found individually on this pottery's products. Its incised bird motif is closely related to designs found on a signed fifteen-gallon water cooler sold in Crocker Farm's August 4, 2022 auction, lot 204. Exceptional form and decoration. Provenance: Recently-surfaced in New England. Excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing ping to rim, minor nicks to shoulder molding, and some minor chipping to bottom edge of saucer. H 8 3/4" ; Diam. 10 1/4".
