Very Rare Stoneware Figure of a Whippet, attributed to Joseph Bell, Muskingum County, OH, circa 1850, molded figure of a reclining whippet on footed slab base, the surface decorated with an appealing splashed Albany slip glaze. Hand-incised details to paws and muzzle. For a related example, see Crocker Farm, Inc., March 31, 2023, lot 273. The only other example besides these two that has been documented can be found at the Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn, MI. Literature: Related example sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s March 31, 2023 auction is illustrated in Bishop, American Folk Sculpture, pg. 218. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few minor base chips, all possibly in-the-making. L 10"; H6 3/4".
