Exceptional One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt American Flag Decoration, OH or WV origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with flared collar and tooled rim, brush-decorated with a central design of an American flag with pennant at the top of its pole, flanked by an anchor, compass, two tulips, a spade, and a heart. Eight-pointed star below. Dashed brushwork decorates the spout. Made in Ohio or possibly West Virginia, as aspects of the pitcher's color as well as its star and floral designs are reminiscent of the work of the Ohio-trained Colvin family while active in Jane Lew, West Virginia, circa 1880. A wonderfully-decorated, patriotic work with strong folk art appeal, this pitcher is famous for having sold as the first lot in our very first auction, held on July 17, 2004. Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 17, 2004, lot 1. Excellent condition with minor flaws. A small spout chip. A 3/4" in-the-firing fissure from rim on proper right side of pitcher. Base chips. A faint 1 3/8" line on underside, extending 3 3/4" up reverse. H 11".
