Rare Glazed Pottery Pitcher with Relief Cherub Pattern, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'" Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850-1880, molded pitcher with upswept spout and ornamental handle with thumbrest, decorated on two sides with different designs of cherubs in various poses below a grapevine. Pitcher is composed of celadon-colored clay accented with flecks of manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside impressed with John Bell maker's mark. One of a small number of surviving examples by John Bell produced in this pattern. This example is the best-colored example that we have offered and also exhibits the finest molding of the design. Of particular note is the relief grape vine motif along the handle, embellished with hand-incised and impressed details, less visible in the few other examples of this type that we have sold. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 3/8".
