Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with spotted tulips in the classic John Bell style along with lesser-seen star motif, applied over a slip-coated surface. Additional star motifs below handles and highlights to handle terminals. An approximately 7 1/2" Y-shaped hairline ascending from base on reverse. A thin 8 1/2" Y-shaped crack below one handle. A 7/8" base chip. A small, in-the-firing chip (stacker mark) to top of rim. Some minor staining. H 13 1/2".
