Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Cake Crock with Domed Lid, Both Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, wide, cylindrical crock with squared rim and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with three groups of graduated swags. Includes extravagant domed lid with tooled treatment, lavishly-decorated with Bell's classic dotted tulips and swags. Crock marked at shoulder and lid marked on underside. Whether the two pieces were made for each other is unknown, although the lid's fit is excellent. The lid is the first domed type by Bell in stoneware that we have ever offered. Crock with thin crack across underside, continuing partway up front and reverse, losses to one handle, and two chips to interior of rim. Lid in excellent, essentially as-made condition.
