Rare and Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'.," PA origin, circa 1850-1880, ovoid pitcher with footed base, tooled rim, and ribbed handle, exuberantly brush-decorated on the left and right sides with three spotted tulips in John Bell's distinctive style. A seventh tulip with fanned blossom runs vertically up the front of the pitcher. Brushed foliate motifs to collar and handle. Arguably the finest one-gallon stoneware pitcher by John Bell that we have ever offered, this example's profuse tulip decoration canvasing the vessel's sides is unusual for this prized maker. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 10 1/2".
