Surface decorated with heavy manganese sponging and covered in a clear lead glaze. Underside of teapot impressed with John Bell maker's mark surrounded by two incised rings. Attesting to the rarity of this form, this lot is the first John Bell teapot that we have ever offered among the hundreds of signed examples of his work that we have sold over the last twenty years. Of significance is the extraordinary condition of this work, down to the survival of its original lid and the delicate applied tab that holds it in place, indicating it was sparingly, if ever, used. Excellent condition with minor wear. H (including lid) 6".
