Extremely Rare One-Gallon Side-Handled Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Adam Keister, Strasburg, VA, circa 1850, ovoid pitcher with short, flaring collar and applied handle placed on the proper left side, brush-decorated across the front with a stem bearing three flower blossoms. Swag decoration to collar. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One of only two American stoneware pitchers that we have seen with a single handle placed on the vessel's side as opposed to its reverse. A thin Y-shaped crack across underside, which includes a thin crack extending 3 1/2" up front of pitcher. A chip to exterior of spout. Three small chips to exterior of rim and two small chips to interior of rim. A thin 2 7/8" crack from rim on reverse. A 1 3/4" chipped section to base. Some in-the-firing contact marks to surface. H 10".
