Extremely Rare Miniature Glazed Redware Spittoon, Inscribed "SPIT BOX," attributed to John G. Coffman, New Market, VA, third quarter 19th century, cylindrical form with footed base, recessed circular opening in top, and carved rectangular opening at shoulder, both surrounded by impressed circles. Underside incised with the highly unusual inscription, "SPIT BOX," in large letters. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. A fine Shenandoah Valley miniature featuring a wonderful inscription indicating its use. Very nice condition with a rim chip and two minor rim nicks. A thin piece of clay adhered to underside. Diam. 3 3/4" ; H 1 7/8".
