Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Owl Decoration, OH origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with semi-squared rim and arched lug handles, decorated with broadly-brushed design of a large owl with horns, well-defined claws, and heavily-feathered body, facing the viewer. Cobalt stripe decoration to handles. The bird's imposing size, spanning roughly 10 1/2" x 9 1/2", and stylized features with human-like face create a powerful folk aesthetic. A masterwork of Ohio stoneware. Provenance: Al Marzorini Collection; Mike Clum Inc. Auctions, Clark Garrett Collection, lot 126. Includes auction tag. Excellent condition with minor chips to handles, a minor chip to underside along bottom edge, a minor in-the-firing ping beside proper right handle, and a salt drip to front. H 14".
