Rare and Fine Glazed Redware Sugar Bowl with Applied Grape and Floral Motif, attributed to James C. Mackley, Mechanicstown (now Thurmont), MD, circa 1875, ovoid form with footed base, flared rim, pierced molding around shoulder, and applied handles with heavily-scored surface and impressed circular details to terminals; decorated on the front and reverse with elaborate hand-modeled and applied vines bearing flowers and leaves, each culminating in a cluster of grapes. Incised veining to leaves and impressed circular details to flowers. Surface decorated with daubs of manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze over a mottled olive and orange ground. An excellent example of Mackley's applied decoration, executed in the manner of his mentor, Anthony Bacher. Chips and wear to rim. Some flakes to interior of rim area. A few chips and light wear to applied decoration. Some residue from use to shoulder. A 1 1/4" chip to foot. H 5 1/8".
