Rare Lidded Stoneware Preserve Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Coffman Family, Rockingham County, VA, mid 19th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with raised lug handles and semi-squared rim, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with opposing brushed bluebell blossoms emanating from a slip-trailed stem. Includes original salt-glazed lid, which has a different color than the jar based on its placement in the kiln. Provenance: Recently-surfaced in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Jar in excellent condition with only minor flaws. A small handle chip. A 1 1/2" surface line on underside, not visible on interior and likely in-the-firing. A salt drip near base and a few minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. Lid in excellent condition with minor nicks to flange on underside. H (excluding lid) 5 1/4" ; Diam. (at base) 5 3/8".
