Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Inkwell, James River, VA, circa 1815-1830, cylindrical form with wheel-thrown hole at center surrounded by four carved quill holes, decorated around top surface with thirteen brushed cobalt dots. Color of clay and cobalt as well as distinctive wire lines on underside indicate an origin somewhere in the James River Valley, possibly Richmond. This inkwell is the only decorated stoneware example of this form from this region that we are aware of. Provenance: Previously excavated in Norfolk, VA; Crocker Farm, Inc., Nov. 5, 2005, lot 24. Professional restoration to shallow chipping to base and rim and professional restoration to minor nicks to top of inkwell. Professional restoration to small chips/wear to center hole. Three small unrestored chips to interior of central hole. Height 7/8" ; Width 3 1/4".
