Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "R BUTT / W," Washington, D.C. origin, circa 1835, ovoid jar with tooled rim and arched tab handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with distinctive vertical foliate motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One handle with an in-the-firing loss and post-firing loss. Wear to edge of opposite handle. Two long vertical cracks from rim on reverse, one extending through one handle. A 4 1/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from base on reverse. A small base chip. H 10".
