Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with applied lug handles and tooling to shoulder and rim, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird perched on a branch, carrying a worm in its beak. Rare solid-cobalt body to bird, its wing and eye delineated in a sgraffito fashion. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Restored cracks to upper body/rim on front and reverse, not affecting decoration. Restoration to surface of proper right handle. A 4 3/4" Y-shaped line from rim on reverse. A faint 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" X-shaped surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. A minor in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder on reverse. A 1 3/4" chip to underside at edge. H 14 1/8".
