Possibly Unique Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Sided Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "SAM.L I. IRVINE / NEWVILLE, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed design of a large bird with wavy feather detail, perched on a pair of branches. Figural designs are essentially unknown in Newville, Pennsylvania stoneware production. This jar and a crock featuring a goat's head in the collection of Winterthur are the only two figural-decorated examples of Irvine stoneware that we are aware of. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced Illinois collection. Very nice condition. A thin 3 1/2" in-the-firing crack on underside, continuing 4" up proper left side of jar where it forms a small Y. A small rim chip. A small in-the-firing ping to proper right handle. H 11 3/8".
