One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Cherries Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, brush-decorated on the reverse with a horizontal stem bearing three cherries flanked by leaves. Wreath motif to base of spout. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, handle terminals at base, and applied clay tabs. Includes tin lid and spout cover. A minor rim chip on reverse. Staining to rim. Some fry to cobalt, which has been colored. Two minor rim chips. H 9 3/4".
