Fine One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, brush-decorated on the reverse with an unusual design of an arching stem bearing leaves and a hanging tulip-like blossom. Front of pail brush-decorated with two related motifs featuring blossoms composed of graduated daubs. Wreath decoration at base of spout. Cobalt highlights to applied tabs, maker's mark, and capacity mark. Very nice condition with two small rim chips, a small spout chip, two minuscule spout nicks, and some light staining. H 9 1/4".
