Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, semi-ovoid jug with unusual squared spout, brush-decorated with the profile of a man's face with long nose emanating from a curved stem of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Featuring a prized Cowden & Wilcox motif, this jug is significant for its illustration in Jeanette Lasansky's iconic 1979 book, Made of Mud: Stoneware Potteries in Central Pennsylvania, 1834-1929, the first resource written on the subject. Literature: Illustrated in Lasansky, p. 52. Spout chips. Some fry to cobalt. Some very minor surface wear to body of jug. H 13".
