Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral and Foliate Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG: PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a large leaf, tulip, graduated blossom, and three looping vines, all conjoined at the stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Wear to cobalt. An in-the-firing ping to leaf. Scattered exfoliation below leaf and to reverse. A small flake to left of decoration. A 1 1/2" faint Y-shaped line below decoration, not visible on interior. Proper left handle with a thin 1" crack and minor nick along edge. Proper right handle with minor wear. A 2" Y-shaped surface line below proper right handle, not visible on interior. A 6" X-shaped line to reverse, not visible on interior. Staining to surface. A minor nick to interior of rim. A shallow 3/4" chip to underside at edge. H 12".
