Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT. PA," circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and squared rim, brush-decorated with a leafy vine bearing a cluster of eight grapes, flanked by two looping tendrils, and two additional hanging leaves. Lightly-stamped above with the maker's mark of Michael and Theophilus Miller along with a three-gallon capacity mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. One of a small number of grapes-decorated pieces known from this pottery. A 2 7/8" in-the-firing flake (contact mark) to proper right side of jar. In-the-firing contact mark to proper right handle. Two shallow glazed-over rim chips. A minor glazed-over chip to interior of rim. Light staining to reverse. Some fry to cobalt. Rim has a slight lean. H 12 1/2".
