Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Figural Decoration, Stamped "HART'S / FULTON," NY State origin, circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a stylized man with spotted and daubed accents to the head and body. Looping ground below and script "2" at base of figure. The first example of Hart family stoneware decorated in this manner that we have offered. A few small chips to interior of rim. A 1" in-the-firing surface line to interior of rim, not visible on exterior. Heavy chipping around inner rim for lid. A 4" Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. A chip and minor nick to proper left handle. A chip to right handle. A 1 1/2" vertical line from rim on proper right side of jar. Traces of old black paint to top of rim and interior of rim. Minor surface staining. Two minor pieces of adhered clay to reverse near base. H 10 1/2".
