Scarce One-Gallon Providence, Rhode Island Stoneware Advertising Crock with Cobalt Bird on Stump Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stump on stylized, shrubbed ground. Impressed with the cobalt-accented advertising, "C.O.BARNES & CO / 317&319 NORTH ???N STR / PROVIDENCE, R,I.". Exceptional size for this decoration. Excellent condition with light staining, two minor chips to proper left handle, and a minuscule nick to proper right handle. H 7 1/8".
