Very Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Goony Bird Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND," Madison Woodruff, possibly with Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, circa 1867-1869, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a large brushed and slip-trailed design of a "goony bird" with mohawk-like crest, spotted and striped details throughout body, and solid cobalt wing, standing atop a looping flourish. Slip-trailed "4" with flourish below to right of bird. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. An exceptionally large rendering of one of the most prized Cortland motifs, and the first churn featuring this design that we have offered. Restored cracks, including one extending through design. Wear to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. A small restored chip to proper right handle. Two minor nicks to proper left handle. H 16 3/4".
