Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "O.L. & A.K. BALLARD. / BURLINGTON. VT.," circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail, its body embellished with spotted, comma-shaped devices and stripes, perched on a leafy branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional size to design, measuring roughly 15" around the curve of the vessel's front. Excellent condition with a minor in-the-firing surface chip near base on reverse and two minor chips to proper right handle. H 12 3/4".
