Rare and Fine Moravian Copper-Glazed Redware Chicken Caster, Salem, NC origin, circa 1810-1830, molded in the form of a chicken with serrated comb, incised oval eyes, and heavily-incised details to wings and tail, standing on a flared base. Original piercing to breast and hollowed interior. Surface covered in a bright-green lead and copper glaze with rare black slip highlights to wing, tail, and edge of base. This recently-discovered example is noteworthy for its rare two-toned scheme and strong condition for a form that is often found damaged. A shallow flake to tail, a small base chip, some light surface wear to wings, and other minor surface wear. L 4 1/8" ; H 3 3/8".
